the lead chef was Madison Cowan, winner of a Chopped champions cook off, with a judge A.Freitag as one sous chef, and one of the more memorable Chopped winners, Lance, who bought his competitor a plane ticket for France so she could see her gran. featured ingredient was kale, and Cowan came up with creative remakes of some traditional, homey dishes like bubble and squeak for one course, and fried chicken and waffle for another.

One of Cowan's current shows is "No Kitchen Required", where he's described as 'competition chef'.

  1. That was an excellent episode! It was a real surprise to see Amanda Frietag as sous, obviously Chef Madison is being groomed for something bigger! Congrats to him and his team!

...although they really went down to the wire, with Amanda Freitag adding that stuff to complete the last plate in the last two seconds. (Yes, there have been many down-to-the-last-second battles too with almost every other IC on the roster) The episode was edited to show more crossed wires/"hesitations" on their part, compared to Team Garces - so it seemed to me - maybe for the draaahmaaah factor?

Good episode, I enjoyed it too. Cowan's team's inventiveness was noteworthy too - and he/they got a perfect 15 score for that.

I really think FN needs to give this guy his own show, or make him an Iron Chef. He is so good.

        1. re: libgirl2

I hope not. Having him as a star on FN would be deleterious to his bona fides as a chef, IMO. He already has his own production company.

I agree. He has just the right amount of exposure.

      2. Could you please not post results in the thread title? You have now spoiled this episode for those of us who have recorded it.

        1. SPOILER:

How wonderfully awesome for Madison and Lance. Two class acts and fan favorites. Love those two.

          1. Really enjoyed this show.

Is it me, or does it seem that Garces loses more than other ICs?

You can check out all the wins and losses at this link - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_...

Scroll down to the bottom for the winning percentages for each chef.

              1. re: ipsedixit

According to Wikipedia, his record is 8-4 (not sure if that includes last night). That gives him a win % of 67% which seems to be close to the rest of the chefs except for Symon, who is just over 80%.

I've been fan of Garces since before the Next Iron Chef competition but nothing he has done on IC has really wowed me. It seems like he shot himself in the foot by doing trios on a few of his plates. Judges were commenting "oh, I like A, but B didn't work for me and C was just OK." If he made "A" the whole plate then he could have had it.

The best battle I've seen Garces do was against challenger Julian Medina in Battle Chocolate. It was a tour du force in Mexican alta cocina. It could have gone either way, Garces wone by 1 point, 72-71. It's probably one of the best ICA episodes in the last couple of years. Both chefs were really clicking at the top of their game and it showed.

How about that Hawaiian Red Snapper episode last season when Garces won with a perfect score?

                      1. re: huiray

I think I missed that one. A perfect score? Wow.

                        1. re: huiray

Guess I missed both of those, though I did catch his battle as a challenger vs. Bobby Flay in "Battle Melon," which due to his victory probably put him on the map at the FN.

I know that Garces doesn't have as many episodes under his belt as the others, but I can never seem to catch reruns of his battles. The one episode that stands out in my mind was his second or third battle, which he lost. The look on his face said it all...he was furious. I think I just had personal high hopes for him since, as I said, I've admired his work for awhile and the sporadic times I've seen him battle he hasn't done so well.

                              Will do. Thanks!

                  2. I was just headed to bed after Chopped All-Stars but was watching the opening of IC to see who the challenger was and what the secret ingredient would be. When I saw Madison pop up as the challenger I knew I had to stay up and watch it. Bonus points for having Lance as one of his sous chefs.

On the first episode of Chopped on which Madison appeared, the final dessert round was between he and Lance. That was a tough final to watch because both of them were really outstanding. But them together and they turned out to quite the team on IC. I wish the secret ingredient have been something more interesting than kale, tho'.

This was a fun episode, even AB lightened up a little.

                    1. Son called, and I missed the last part. Dang!
