Chinese celery with 'toxic' fumes?????

A friend of mine recently came back from China with a story about a delicious dish he was served that contained shrimp and a type of Chinese celery that gave off a steam of some substance that would make people pass out if they smelled it before the steam abated. I've been to much of Asia many times but am not familiar with this.

Anyone have any ideas??????????????? and are we likely to be able to find it served in Orange County, CA or the San Gabriel Valley??

  1. Just was told that the dish is called Chili Shrimp, but features this celery.
