Oaxacan in Fresno?

At a recent Oaxacan cooking class, the teacher mentioned that she thought there were Oaxacan restaurants in Fresno. She'd been to a big Oaxacan celebration one summer while passing thru Fresno, but she didn't know the names of the restaurants. Ring a bell with anyone?

  1. There is a restaurant in Fresno called Oaxaca, featuring the wonderful cuisine of that special part of Mexico. Everything is made fresh on site, including their signature mole, which is black as midnight and very flavorful. My favorite selection is the Oaxacan tamale -- a flat, wide rectangle filled with mole-infused pork, wrapped Oaxaqeno-style in a banana leaf.

A couple of doors down is the Oaxaca bakery, where you can get pan dulce and other delights. And if you're in need of hubcaps or car parts, the neighborhood is full of vendors to serve your every after-market need.

I've heard that you can get chapulines here, even though they're not on the menu.

I chatted with a Mixteca lady from Exeter last weekend who said there was a good Oaxacan restaurant in Fresno near Kings Canyon Road. Would Oaxaca Restaurant be the place? I was also wondering about Plaza Oaxaca. Updates and additions to the oaxacan landscape welcome!

Belmont runs parallel to KC Rd a mile to the north. There well may be one on Kings Canyon but I'm not aware of it, need to do another recon of that street. It's full of little Mexican and Asian holes in the wall for a distance of about four miles.

The one on N. First St. is next to a high school, we went after a teacher's meeting several years ago on a reco from one in the group and were not impressed. Typical gringo-ized fare and given the location and clientele, seriously doubt if anything has changed.

Thanks for the info. Can't wait to hear what you find.

Have also run across a mention of El Quetzal in Clovis as possibly Oaxacan, but no details.
