Driving from Charleston to DC in May

We're going to be driving from Charleston to DC in May. It'll be a straight drive, but we would love recommendations for places to stop and eat along the way. My husband has a gluten intolerance, but as long as there is some offerings without wheat, he's fine. I love local gems and we both LOVE barbecue.

Have you searched some of the other threads on this topic/ There are several:

I don't drive up and down 95 much, but I cross it going east and west. I enjoy Fuller's BBQ in Lumberton. Its right off 95, and despite the name, the bbq isn't very good, but they have a large buffet reaturing lots of southern style veggies and other stuff. There is also a new bbq place in Lumberton that might be worth checking out:

You might also want to post something on the Mid-Atlantic board in order to get recs for Virginia.

How far are you willing to get off that ole 95?

I usually just blast through with road snacks. The hardest part of that trip is that the traffic is the worst at the end of the trip.

It depends on how much time it would add to the drive... I haven't really look at the options yet. Is there a reasonable route that is more interesting than the interstate but doesn't take forever?

Not to my knowledge. The scenic routes would take a lot longer. I95 is the most direct.

Look at Wilbur's in Goldsboro. It's not quite halfway, and I haven't been in years. But it gets good reviews here and it's only about 10 miles off 95.
