Hunting for morels

I love morels but don't enjoy paying $50 for a pound of them. Where can a Chicago-area resident spend a nice spring afternoon huting for these delectable items in the wild?

  1. Ah the days of $50/per lb morels. I bought my first batch this season at Fox & Obels and they were charging $70/per lb. Good luck with anyone ever telling you where to find them other than generally (ie near rotting Oak trees in the woods etc). Nobody will tell you where they get theirs. My dad used to go foraging with friends for morels in the spring and hen of the woods in the fall and they made him wear a blindfold till they got to their favorite spots! My sister, who lives downstate, has been finding some in her wooded yard but not very many.

Price update. Went to Fox & Obel today and the price dropped to $60 per lb. Such a bargain! But they looked lovely so they are on the menu tonight.

    2. Apparently the Lakeview neighborhood of Chicago. One of my friends was installing a security camera outside the back entrance to his condo, dropped a screwdriver and when he bent down to pick it up noticed morels growing out of a sidewalk. He harvested approximately three dozen of them. Wouldn't have believed it if I didn't see it for myself.
