OK, I had to pick my husband up at the airport this noon. In return, he agreed to take me to lunch. There's this place I like, Taqueria La Michoacana, on Plumb St. near the airport (near Costco). Imagine how upset we were to go there and find it had been closed and replaced with a Bar and Grill!!! Since I was craving a taco fix, my husband took me to another place I've been to which is OK, Puerto Nuevo on Kietzke (near Moana). We should have gone to Beto's, but that was too far away and I was getting HUNGRY!!

Well, when we arrived, they had a special advertised of Huevos Rancheros. Now, I LOVE Huevos, and I've eaten a lot of them (including more than a few times in Mexico. Major disappointment. I think of Huevos as two eggs, sunnyside up or over-easy (but only if you insist!), on a corn tortilla, with ranchero sauce. Well, these were what I would called Huevos Revueltos (maybe huevos revolting ): SCRAMBLED (ugh!) eggs scrambled with onions and tomatoes and chilis....not a tortilla or sauce in sight. The whole idea of Huevos Rancheros is to have some of that good runny egg yolk to mix with the sauce and wipe up with tortillas, no? Am I totally off base here? I asked the kitchen if they had made a mistake, but no, they insisted these were huevos rancheros (and yes, I spoke to them in Spanish....)

So, Chowhounds, when you think of Huevos Rancheros, what do YOU think of? Are you like me in preferring them without a lot of cheese on top? (preferably no cheese....) Anyone have any good spots to eat them anywhere in Northern Nevada or Northern California? I will travel for a good plate of Huevos!

I've had Huevos Rancheros at a number of places (only in the US), and have often been surprised. One spot (in Oakland CA) serves something like a green pepper and onion omelette with salsa on top. It was tasty, sure, but not at all what I expected. Another was more of a frittata!

I've stopped ordering it without asking what's in it anymore -- preferably supported by what the menu lists.

It seems to just be a label they put on any egg dish that is slightly spicy. Kind of like some places say "Chicago style pizza" for anything in a deep dish...

And, yes, without the ranchero sauce, it loses a lot... including the appropriateness of the name.

I agree with your description of the "true" huevos and am fairly certain that if you looked for recipes in most cookbooks, that is what you would also find. In terms of where to get them, I used to love the huevos made by the Davenport Cash Store just north of Santa Cruz on highway 1. Had them again a year or so ago and they were still pretty good -- the runny egg, tasty, fresh salsa, nice crisp corn tortilla. Good luck!

Hey, do you think they'd be open the day after Thanskgiving? Huevos would make a good start to my trip "over the hills and through the woods" home from my sister's in Santa Cruz!

Yes, they probably would be, but you should call to be sure. It's really a cute little place. I have very fond memories of it from my college days at UCSC.

Sad news about the Michoacuna closure. I did notice a taco truck at the bottom of the Wells overpass, starting a few days ago. This is the first one I have seen in this area. I haven't tried it yet, has anyone else?

Never seen the taco truck before. I'll have to check it out.

About the Michoacana: There is a sign for a "Taqueria Michoacana" in the shopping center where Olive Garden is...where there used to be another Mexican restaurant that was very forgettable. (you know, near Rickshaw Paddy's) Do you think they just moved? That's near my office; I'll have to go check it out!!
