Went to Kam Man Market nee Super 88 South Bay this morning and they had ENORMOUS lobsters in the tank. Every person walking by was commenting on their size. Must have been 5 pounds or more each. Wasn't in the market for water bugs today, so I forgot to look at the price, but figured there must be someone out there looking for them.

Hah, I just ate two of them with family. One was 5 pounds the other almost 6.

They were pricier then usual at $8.99, but very fresh (lively in the tank is key) and tasty.

    Excellent lobstas.

8.99 is the going rate right now...even at market basket FYI - Seawitch in Peabody has REAL MONSTERS. you want a 15 pounder? Go there.

Okay I should have started a new thread, but I didn't. Johnny's foodmaster is running a sale this week $5.99/lb for lobsters 2-3 lbs. I got two around 2lbs each, nice firm meat and shell's. They were some of the smaller ones that they had. First lobster of the year for me.

Same price at MB starting tomorrow. They're usually smaller (1.5lbs max), but they occasionally have some monsters. My mom picked up a 6lb one from the Middleton MB a couple weeks ago.

It's been 5.99 at Market Basket. I bought two yesterday over 3 pounds in Chelsea. One was close to 4. I had to cook them separately. Very, very, very tasty.

          They also had smaller lobsters.

Anyone know where these big lobsters come from?? They are prohibited by state regulations and possibly federal as well...

Not federal. You just can't keep big ones in parts of MA. Perfectly legal in ME and Canada.

No you cant keep them in ME either. http://www.maine.gov/dmr/rm/lobster/g...
If its not federal then they could get them in federal waters which i think would be 3 miles off shore or more.

              Gotcha on ME.

It looks like in Outer Cape Cod recreational lobstering has no size limit:

But I don't think that is true for commercial. Maybe the big ones are all Canadian.

I was in Hook's today and they had the 5lb+ for $5.99/lb.

He said that they were catching them pretty far off shore. Stellwagen is 40-50 miles East of Boston and no lobstering there, but beyond that would be fine..or head North East from Gloucester to Federal waters. Canada also supplies a lot of large lobsters.

I was in Chinatown today and found a newly opened seafood market across the street from New Shanghai that had some big lobsters for $9.99/lb cheaper prices than I have seen for much smaller lobsters recently, I didn't buy any though since I'm going out of town. Let me know if you try them, thanks

Yes I thought it was better to bump this thread since it had some prices from last year
