Passover shopping again...

Time for my annual post. Anything new on the KLP shopping scene since last year?

Also, for the past couple of years, I've made the trek to Sobeys on Clark for my main shop. Last year, I think I went on the Saturday before the holiday so it wasn't as busy. Unfortunately, I can't do that this year. Assuming all day Sunday will be a zoo (right?), do you think the selection will still be good midweek or do I need to brave the Sunday crowds to avoid a picked over selection?

Last year, we went to Sababa for our post-shopping lunch. Looking for a similarly casual, nearby (Bathurst and Steeles area) spot to go to with our kids this year. Dr. Laffa, maybe? Any other suggestions? It needn't be kosher or Middle Eastern (though either or both is fine). Thanks!

Just back from the Loblaws on St. Clair (at Bathurst) and I'm infuriated!

They have a large Passover section, but they seem to have just dumped all the kosher items in the store there, including real bread crumbs (specifically marked "Not for Passover"). If I wasn't in a rush, I would have spoken to a manager.

Is there a recommended butcher/market downtown to buy a passover brisket or do I just order one from Nortown on Eglinton? Thanks!

Thanks all. I know, I know, I'm late to the game but there's still a whole week to go and I don't have a spare fridge at the moment! Anyway, I will try and get there at some point tomorrow and mbe combine it with Steeles Deli (thanks kwass!) or Kiva's. That Costco chocolate covered matzoh sounds good MeMeMe - what was the brand name? It's funny how something so random can actually taste so good. Good on you for tackling (or being tacked at) No Frills - not sure I have the energy for that. I also tend to make a few stops each year - usually the Sobeys on Clark, blintzes from Daiters and Haymishe. Freshco is a name I don't know - do they really have that much more of a selection or that much better pricing than Sobeys or the Metro in Lawrence Plaza?

FreshCo are mostly rebranded Price Chopper stores, still owned and operated by Sobeys.

We divided our Passover shopping between three stores and we believe that the prices were pretty good. We started at Costco on Wilson and although there isn't much, we bought whatever they had -- matzoh meal, matzoh, chocolate covered matzoh, a dark Passover seder plate, cheeses. We then went to No Frills at Wilson & Bathurst and got jams, tins of stuff, Mrs. Unger's Gefilte Fish loafs, potato starch, bags of chips, boxes of stuff, soups. We finished at Freshco at Bathurst & Steeles and bought chocolate bars and boxes of chocolates and more chips, marshamallows, essentially all the "goodies". We went last Sunday and found it quite effortless and painless, both in terms of crowds and cost. I would go sooner rather than later if I were you (and, it's already kind of getting late). Saturday (tomorrow) would be best. Happy Passover.

I bought the most delicious looking dark chocolate covered Matzo at Costco last weekend. Can't wait to crack it open. Loblaws St. Clair has a wall of matzo to be bought individual or in bulk.....

If I were you, I'd go as quickly as possible. Passover foods have been on the shelves for weeks now. That being said, whatever you do, do not go to Sobeys on Sunday. Go mid-week. As for where to go for your post-shopping lunch, Dr Laffa is a good choice. If you want Deli, Steeles Deli is very good. It's on the North side of Steeles, right between Bathurst and Yonge. Hanna's Shwarama is also a good choice. It's on Bathurst @ Rutherford.
