Footer is displayed in the middle of the page
Often when I open a thread, or view a board, the footer (4 gray boxes) is displayed in the middle of the page, on top of the listings or posts. Refreshing the page fixes the problem, but this makes using the site difficult, as the page contents change when I refresh -- either it will display different listings, especially if I opened that window earlier, or else it will un-collapse the replies I've already read (depending on where in the chowhound site I am).
I usually view the site by opening links in a new tab, and then reading those tabs, so I don't always know until sometime later that the page had a problem. I have not noticed a pattern of when this happens. I would say it is about 1/4 to 1/3 of the time. I am using Vista, IE7 (at work, can't upgrade or use a different browser).
I searched for "footer" in the archives and did not find anything relevant.
(Please remove this post if this was not the appropriate place to report this issue.)
This is still a problem for me, but I discovered today that if I happen to be in a view that has collapsed replies, if I click on one to expand it, that sends the footer overlay to its regular place at the bottom of the page, and keeps the other posts collapsed. (I've only tried it with posts above the footer overlay, so I don't know if clicking one below would also fix it.)
So, that's a way I can view the collapsed pages, but still leaves no real solution for the full board listings, which will change contents if I refresh. On the other hand, those views are usually sorted by date order, so I only have to look at the top ones again to find anything new.
This probably doesn't make any difference for you to be able to fix this, but I wanted to let you know.
We've seen plenty of odd behavior from older versions of Internet Explorer, but I don't believe we've heard about this one yet.
How much of the footer gets misplaced- just the four gray boxes, or the red bar from the very bottom as well? And are you using any plugins or special settings in IE, or just the standard stuff that came with your computer?
Of course, now I can't get the problem to happen. I'll have to let you know later today or tomorrow whether it includes the red bar too, since I can't remember offhand.
I don't have any plugins -- we're not allowed to install anything extra. I don't think I have any special settings either, although I suppose I've changed a few from the defaults (refresh every time, for instance).
Thanks for your help with this, it's been really annoying!
