Has anyone been to the Portuguese Fisherman in South River? Friends rave about the restaurant.

I loved that place when I was younger. It was pretty exotic fare for a suburban NJ pre-teen back then. As I haven't been there in a decade, I'm afraid I don't have much to offer on how the place is today. I do appreciate the memories I have of it though - thanks for reminding me.

Web site looks interesting but the menu would not open .
I liked the place in the late seventies but didn't know it still existed .

Went there with friends last night. To put it bluntly...it was a disaster. The food wasn't bad. The service was abysmal. When we arrived(7:30) ,the place was full. It quickly cleared out with no "turn-over" of tables. That was my first hint that we were in for a bad time. The waiter and busboys all had a take it or leave it attitude. So much for the supposed friendliness of the restaurant. The food, although palatable, was nothing special and I certainly expected better. When asked for the check, the waiter forgot about us for about a 1/2 hour. He must have gone out to eat...lol. So much for our adventure in South River. I'll stick to the Ironbound from now on.
