Nathans hot dogs at Safeway...what varieties (Calgary)

grandgourmand Mar 26, 2012 07:14 AM

Hi,

my mom is coming to visit me in Toronto later this week. She's coming from Calgary. I hear you lucky Albertans now have Nathans hot dogs at Safeway. Can someone tell me the varieties they stock? If they have the ones with casings, I'd ask her to pick me up a few packs for the freezer and upcoming BBQ season.

thanks.

We bought some last night. They were good, but perhaps not worth the (very) premium price. $7 for a pack of 8 low-grade hot dogs is pretty steep IMO. For the same price, you can get locally made sausages that are much larger and much higher quality. Thanks, but no thanks, Nathan's!

I have been buying Nathan's at Bon Ton meats.5 frozen in a pack. They are much larger than the ones at Safeway. The texture even seems different.

nonlinear, Nathan's are anything but low grade. They are made from front quarter beef flesh, no by products or slime additives. When you refer to sausage it may include pork eyes, chitterlings, snout, anus etc., or it may be a little better. At least with a kosher style product you know what you are getting.

Do you have a reference for what Nathan's are made of? Their website says only beef and secret spice.
Who do you know that uses pig eyesand chitterlings in their sausage product?

I don't care what they say is in them, they taste and eat like cheap Oscar Meyer weiners. Certainly not worth the premium price. Hebrew National makes a far better ghetto dog, but alas they don't sell those in YYC.

dingdingding. Nonlinear your so right we bought some last night Nathans Hot Dogs, they weren't very good and so salty we couldn't even eat them. I love Hebrew National they are awesome hot dog. My understanding is you can't get Hebrew National anywhere in Canada anymore. I miss being in the US sometimes.

Saw them at the Westbrook Safeway. All beef. Two sizes - extra long and regular. Both varieties had 8 wieners. They were $6.99

howlin, which Sobey's did you find them at? I haven't seen them at our local Tuscany Sobey's.

It's true, I saw Nathan's at the Market Mall location of Safeway this past weekend. There were two varieties, but I have to admit I didn't make note of what they were specifically. They were in packages such as Schneiders, and 5 or 6 links per package. Hope this helps!
