Vienna meal pre/post opera -- suggestions please?

We will be in Vienna in early May, and one night (Wednesday) we have tickets for the Staatsoper at 7:30.

If I were in New York, I would eat dinner at 5:30, and lots of places would have pre-theater menus, this would be normal behavior.

If I were in Paris, I would have a snack, then a light meal afterwards because nothing would be open for dinner at 5:30, and Parisians would look at me like I had 2 heads if I tried to make a reservation that early.

I'm guessing that Vienna is more like Paris, is this right? Do people generally dine after the opera?

And can you make suggestions for both options...perhaps a quick snack at a cafe...a glass of wine, a small plate or 2. And then a good place for a light meal afterwards?

Many thanks!

Vienna is neither New York nor Paris. There are practically no pre-theater menus, but on the other hand many restauranst are open from 11 a.m. right through to midnight, and even without going to a theater or the opera people might have an early dinner - or late lunch - at 5 or 6 p.m.

The best place for a pre-opera snack is a Kaffeehaus, and there are three of these right behind the State Opera, the Cafe Tirolerhof, the Cafe Mozart and the Cafe Sacher.

And yes, people dine after the opera, and there are a few restaurants within walking distance. I would suggest the Anna Sacher, the high-end restaurant of the Hotel Sacher. It is open till midnight, the kitchen closes at 11:30 p.m., and if you reserve a table for "after the opera" they might mention that you will not be able to order a six-course menu, but a three course menu will not be a problem...

A less expensive alternative might be the "Gasthaus zur Oper", which is just a few steps away and offers classic Viennese cuisine, open until 0:15 a.m. , closes 11:15 p.m. Again you should mention that you come "after the opera", and they will tell you exactly what they will serve at this time.

BTW: all the Wednesday performances in May start at 7 p.m., and end before 10 p.m., so dining afterwards not be a major problem.

      Should read:

      Sorry for the ommission...
