San Antonio: Upscale Interior Mexican

luckyfatima Mar 22, 2012 03:28 PM

Is there any place that serves sort of upscale interior Mexican along the lines of Hugo's in Houston or La Fonda San Miguel in Austin?

I'm not familiar with the other places your recommended, but we go to Cielito Lindo often, the owners are from Mexico City and many Mexican nationals frequent there. Excellent food, not tex-mex (except for one page in the menu, ignore it).
It's in the Stone Oak area, Huebner and Stone Oak.

I don't know if they are quite as upscale but my choice would be either El Mirasol or Sol Luna (owned by same people and have very similar menus) or La Paloma Blanca in Alamo Heights.

El Mirasol is my favorite Mexican restaurant in San Antonio. The Chile En Nogada is awesome. Last time I was there they offered a plate with 2 types of enchiladas and a 1/2 chile en nogada. It was so amazing that I'm still struggling for words to describe it, lol. They have handmade margaritas (they call Chispas) which are my favorite in town.

Even though it clearly costs more than most other places, there is ofen a wait for a table at peak times. A sure sign of a killer place in uber-price-sensitive San Antonio.
