Looking for cheap eats and one great birthday dining experience - Help!

amybobamy Mar 22, 2012 10:15 AM

I am visiting San Diego from Seattle in April. We will be staying in Hillcrest but able to get around town in a rental car. Are there any special places that we should definitely visit? I have done some Yelp searches but Chowhounds always know better. We are interested in both ethnic cheap eats and one really nice birthday dinner place.

We lean towards a gluten-free diet (so prefer Asian and Mexican/Latin American Cuisine).

Does anyone have any suggestions?

For Mex cheap eats that are chow worthy, I'd recommend Super Cocina and the birthday dining, maybe Wine Vault or Cafe Chloe. Also, for some additional choices, there is a bogo coupon for Linkery and El Take it Easy floating around in one of the dining rags.

Urban Solace has a gluten-free menu.
Anything Asian (and good) is on Convoy Ave, Clairemont Mesa and Balboa Ave area. Do a search and you'll turn up the usual suspects.

Sushi Kaito in Encinitas..you could do the omakase for your one special meal and still not break the bank.

plenty of cheap eats for mexican favorites - a search will turn up about a million,

+1 on Kaito. you'll get your special dinner, excellent sushi and Asian all rolled into one.
