I'm looking for someplace around New Haven to buy wood chips for smoking food in my Weber kettle grill. I'd like hickory, applewood, mesquite etc. Thanks.

I'd try and call Agway in N. Branford or Goodies Hardware in East Haven to start.
Cabella's in E.Hartford, even Stop and Shop may have some.
Ebay may be another good option if you don't mind waiting a few days.
    Good luck!

I have purchased them at Home Depot in Hamden, and at Chef's Emporium in Wallingford but they were pricy there

Lowe's, Home Depot are usually safe options. As grilling season arrives, you'll find better availability/variety and can probably even find them in most of the big grocery chains. If you want woods beyond the 3 most common that you mention above, you'll most likely have to go elsewhere.

Surpisingly, I have recently purchased apple and cherry wood chips from Lowes in Plainville. I would imagine that they all carry the same items though. They used to only carry the basic hickory and misquite. I know it's not near New Haven but if your ever near Cabela's they also have a variety of wood chips.
