Passover Alternative to Gefilte Fish

I am hosting our family's sedar this year and I am probably the only person in our family who likes gefilte fish. The only family member who makes it, makes a version that even I won't eat because it has no seasonings: no flavor.

I desperately need to find an alternative fish course. Salmon? Salmon mousse? Salmon spread? (I seem to be stuck in a groove).

Help. What's worked for you?

Why not a simple Salmon Ceviche?,,,,by some salmon..slice it thin...place it on a platter and season it with salt, pepper, some lime jucie, some cilantro and then some good olive oil.....slice some lemons real thin and serve it on a plate....with matzoah and butter or schmaltz it is wonerful!

Does anyone know where to purchase frozen A&B (or other brand) of fish loaves in order to make gefilte fish (Baltimore area)?

I found a fish shop making gefilte fish in loaves, selling them frozen. They were almost tasteless. However, those things would soak up flavors like a sponge. I sliced the loaf, used a very potent mushroom veggie stock as a poaching liquid, and had something delicious.

I'd love to say a salmon mousse would be delicious, but in my family, we always do no dairy at all for the Seder meals, even though we don't keep kosher.

What if you did a salmon in aspic?

Are you going for a traditional feel with the Seder meal, or more for a foodie feel? I can imagine a salmon mousse with coconut milk being delicious, but I can't see it feeling very, well...Jewish.

this isn't for me. I was just responding to the no dairy issue re: salmon mousse. I would not make it for seder, myself,, but then I wouldn't make salmon mousse of any kind for seder.

I have served cold poached salmon or salmon cakes.

Bialik Chicken, whereby you just grind breast and treat it as you would fish, right to the poach. Sorry, just saw it needs to be fish for you......but can you make some very lightly flavored quenelles? Same difference, really......but you can flavor it more to your family's taste, using not-strongly flavored fish. A small piece of poached salmon, pike or something else would be fine, served cold, with lemons and capers and 'radish.

my MIL just males lovely small portions of grilled fillet of salmon for those of us who are icked out by gefilte fish. She serves it w/ wasabi sauce on the side. Delicate and tasty.

how about a riff on brandade using smoked whitefish? or a smoked fish salad (preferably with plenty of dill)?

Nice list of links. But...the second recipe, from jwi.org, includes 2 slices of bread in the ingredient list. Any ideas on what to substitute?

Smoked white fish? I love gefilte fish but I love smoked white fish even more.

I've never made gefilte fish but most of the prepared gf I've had neede some good horseradish to really compliment it. What seasoning would punch it up? What do you recommend?

I just came across this site with many different approaches to gefilte fish and thought it might interest you, hill. Have not made any of them but am interested.
