There is a phenomenal Japanese izakaya(tapas) restaurant on Church a block south of Carlton called "Guu" which also has a branch on Bloor near Bathurst. These are branches of the Guu restaurants of Vancouver. There are 5 in Vancouver.(4 in the downtown area)& they're always packed. The chicken karaage (fried chicken)is one of their amazing dishes.

This is not a sushi restaurant. The atmosphere at all locations is loud & quite unique. These are drinking restaurant bar with amazing food. The line up onthe Church location starts almost immediately after opening at 5pm, do if given a choice, the1 on the south side of Bloor east of Bathurst has an interior waiting hall if their is inclement weather :http://www.guu-izakaya.com/

Yes, I've been to Guu - the restaurant I was asking about was the former "studio" restaurant which was a bit of a dive on church, south of carlton on the east side.
