Best siu yuk / 烧肉 - Chinese Crispy Roast Pork?
Hey Kids!
Been a while since I heard from the crew and I've been craving some. :-)
Is Ho-Ho still the go-to spot?
Any other new, better discoveries?
Anyone been converted to Porchetta sandwiches instead, and given it up? :-)
Hmmm, is there a chinese sandwich stuffed with siu yuk?
(Well, that should get some lively discussion going :-)
Cheers,
.James.

Wanted to mention that I stopped into Kum Hong a couple of Fridays ago about 5pm to get my fix of BBQ pork and they just happened to bring out a roast pig just as I was about to order. Had to try it and got an order from the shoulder section. It was absolutely amazing ! Tender, moist, and SUPER crispy skin.
Incredibly lucky timing this day. Had it before and it was meh. Well worth calling ahead to find out when they'll bring out a fresh batch...

My go to is Princess Roast meats inside Market Village in Markam. It is off the food court. I love the roast pork and the duck. It is on the salty side though, so I would not recommend this place for anyone sensitive to sodium content. Also this place is not cheap.

re: sweetie
Is Princess the one in the food court next to the pho place? If so, yes, it is one of the better ones as well.
Another one - where the price is cheaper is at Kennedy and Denison. Not inside the supermarket (where all you get is very fatty roast pork). it would be the take out BBQ place in the 'food court' outside the supermarket. Very crispy skin as well. That's where my parents go to get theirs.
They have also recommended Princess in the past as well.-

I agree...Princess inside Market Village its one of the better ones though pricier.....Totally agree with sweetie on the sodium level....In that vicinty shark fin city pacific mall used to have decent Siu Yuk but i think recently the standard has gone down a bit...again they are on the pricier side...

re: Charles Yu
I had both the pork and duck at Shark's fin city a few weeks back for a quick lunch, still good, but not worth a special trip if you're not in the area.
My wife still frequents Jade at Finch and Birchmount on her way home from work (so does my chinese optometrist friend, who goes there weekly). They also have a "teenage" version of a suckling pig, which is a little less fatty and pricey.
Don't forget that if you get take out to eat at home, or buy it later in the day, you need to reheat at least the skins a bit in a mini oven for a few minutes under the broiler to render it crunchy again (line w/ tin foil or use a plate to catch the drippings).

I will respond. Based on recommendations from this Board, we have now tried out
1) Ho Ho - (I think that's the one at Midland & McNicoll)
2) the one on Highway 7 next to Omei
3) Mikes (I think that's the one at Brimley & Sheppard)And in that order. We really liked Ho Ho. Crispy skin is important. The second one, long lineup but we were wondering what all the fuss was about.
For us, the clear winner was Mikes. Crispy skin and the meat was juicy. And overly salty. We tried one piece in the car. And simply ended up finishing the whole box in the car. So that was a great recommendation.

re: caitlink
grabbed some roast pork from Ho Ho maybe... maybe a year ago and was with a small group, universally we decided it was salty with very little flavour and might even have been a bit dry! we did get rib section and it seriously made me wonder what the hype was about. i am infrequently by that plaza and will give it one more go, but it was some of the worst that i had had :/
