Where to go in Prospect Lefferts Gardens?

We're about to move from Park Slope to Prospect Lefferts Gardens and would love advice from locals about where to shop and eat. We'll be on the northeast side of the neighborhood (near New York Ave and Midwood) and are planning on keeping our membership at the Park Slope Co-op, but other than that we want to stay local (ie within about a mile) whenever possible.

Based on some browsing of maps it looks like either the Associated Market at Sullivan Place or the Key Food at Nostrand and Winthrop could be our go-to places for basic affordable groceries - any preferences? Ideas for where to pick up fresh seafood would also be great.

Restaurant-wise, we've eaten at Culpepper's (and liked it) and are looking forward to comparing it with the many other West Indian places in the area. Based on online reviews, I'm also looking forward to trying out Mama Louisa's, Blue Roost, Bay Leaf, and Ramagi - any other suggestions? Thanks in advance!

  1. Re: supermarkets. That Key Food is terrible. I mean really, really bad. The Associated on Nostrand is OK, the one on Flatbush at the other end of the neighborhood is better. I've found Western Beef has improved greatly in the last few years, and now they have some organic stuff and fancy beers and so on. They have a fish market in the store (separately owned) which I think is OK. Their meat selection, while heavy on the unhealthy stuff, is always fresh. The manager at WB is open to suggestions and I've seen some real changes there.

For fish, there's also Labay market on Nostrand - specializing in Caribbean fish.

Tony's Meat Market on Nostrand/Lefferts is a go-to butcher for lots of ppl in the area. I haven't tried it personally.

Not too many sit down restaurants. Lots of great Caribbean take-out places on Nostrand, Culpeppers is one of my faves. Some of the buffet places (Soldiers, etc.) have good food but it's hit or miss. I know it's a bit of a shlep from where you are, but Ali's Roti Shop (Flatbush betw Midwood and Rutland) is also a great spot for doubles and roti, and has a sit down area. Gloria's (Nostrand & Empire) is also good.

Mama Louisa is great but it's a deli and only open for lunch (closed Sundays too).

Pizza: Ramagi has a nice atmosphere for sit down but my family found their pizza to be seriously lacking. I think they'd do better as a wine bar and just forget the cooking. Family Pizza (Flatbush & Winthrop) is the best in the hood but they don't deliver. You'll also be near Billy's which some people like (we did not).

HTH - looking forward to hearing about any places you discover! I've been in the neighborhood for 6 years and still haven't hit every Caribbean spot.

Thanks so much - this is very helpful! Too bad about Mama Louisa's - I was looking forward to having them as a take-out option on my way home from work, but I'm sure we'll figure out a way to check them out regularly anyway. And yes, I'll definitely post some updates about any local finds!

    2. I should also add that Agra Classic (a.k.a. Gandhi) is a great Indian delivery place, though not much to look at for dine-in. Much better than other local options King of Tandoor and Bay Leaf.
