Sour Salt crystals

mjtx Mar 12, 2012 03:07 PM

I am trying to find Sour Salt in crystals/chunks. I can find the granulated/powder form, but I can't find the crystals/chunks. Does anyone know where I can find it?

"Sour salt" is actually, citric acid. According to Google, Williams-Sonoma is supposed to carry it. But, you might also try Tom Thumb at Preston Forest. Sour salt is used in a lot of Jewish and kosher cooking and that particular TT has a large kosher department.
My grandmother always used it when making her meat borscht.

Thanks. I've tried TT, etc, but all that I can find are bottles of granulated/powdered. Years ago I bought bottles of chunks/crystals, but after all of these years I ran out. I use it in stuffed cabbage and in my sweet and sour cabbage. I'm having a hard time figuring out how much granulated equals the amount of chunks that I used.

Try Googling "sour salt". There are some interesting links pertaining to sour salt. Sour salt was my Russian, Jewish grandmothers secret to her sweet and sour borscht.

A tip: Call Michael (the Russian, Jewish owner) of Deli-News. They make a sweet and sour borscht similar to my grandmothers. Not as good as my grandmother's borscht, of course (LOL). Maybe he can help you locate it.

Thanks. I think that I will ask Michael. I emailed Rokeach, but they don't sell it anymore in any form. One time a while ago when I realized that my bottle was almost empty I found a place that sold the chunk style in bulk, but I didn't want a pallet of it. Maybe I should have bought one and repackaged it for resale since no one seems to carry it in that form anymore :-).

Thank you. I called them and it isn't the size that I used to get, but it seems to be larger than what I have so I think I will place a small order.
