REPORT: Well, my niece and I took the plunge, got the Groupon and went to Umami.
The sushi was OK (rice not overly sugary at least, but not super fresh), and the cooked food (Chinese and Thai) was pretty bad. The chicken in the pad see ew tasted off. The service was friendly, but uninformed and quite slow even though we were the only people in the restaurant.
The impression I got of Umami was that someone thought, 'Hey, you know what we need in the near N. Valley/4th St area? A sushi/Asian-type place!' -- and then tried to open such a place without any real understanding of the cuisine or restaurant management. It's too bad, because that's exactly what we do need; this just isn't a very good version.
