looking for recs in miami and Key Largo
Am going to Miami with the kids around 10 year old. We are doing 2 day in Key Largo and 3 days in miami. We are fans of Cuban, Hatian, Jamaican and Puerto Rican food. Would appreciate recommendations. We generally like hole in the wall type places and doesn't even have to be a sit down. We are not fancy white table cloth type of people.
When I live there I used to go to a cuban place (cannot remember) that had prepared food and you could look and choose bunch of items. That would be perfect.
My sister has lived on lower Key Largo (actually Tavernier but no one knows that name so "lower Key Largo" works better!) for 30+ years. She's at Mile Marker 92.5 and right up the block you'll find "The Cuban Place" more formally known as:
Sunrise Supermarket & Restaurant: 91885 Overseas Highway, Tavernier.
Over the years I've gotten lots of takeout from here including roasted chickens, pork, plantains, rice and beans, homemade bread, and some killer flan. This is the real deal, it is a working man's place. No frills. And there are also tables for dine in.
If you are looking for hole in the wall and good food in the Keys, this fits the bill.
On the Ocean (East) side, about half mile past the Dairy Queen in the center divider at 92.5. If heading south and you get to the Hospital or Winn Dixie plaza turn around, you went too far.
The Cuban place you describe sounds like Palacio de los Jugos. I think someone told me recently they had a good meal at Naomi's in Little Haiti. I've had good shrimp and conch from Chef Creole. You may also want to look into B&M Market on 79th St., Clive's on Miami Avenue, Irie Isle on 167th St. Tap Tap is everyone's default recommendation for Haitian because it's on South Beach. These other places are mostly in neighborhoods where some caution is recommended.
Hounds like to see a little research on the part of the poster, but since I'm off to Largo myself next week, and had to do some legwork myself, I'll throw you a bone on that segment of your request: http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/761950
As for "Miami", I think you need to narrow it down a tad. Read through posts on the board.
