Kuala Lumpur - Dim sum supper at Mee Bon (米文包饺茶室), Jalan Ipoh

Trust the Chinese-Malaysians to offer "dim sum", an essentially breakfast dish, for supper! The 60-something-year-old Mee Bon Coffee Shop on Ipoh Road offers dim sum from 6am in the morning till 2am the next day.

I was brought here by my old-timer KL friends who'd been here since they were kids! Considering that they are now 60-something themselves, now *that* is what I call loyal fans!

The steamed pork buns at Mee Bon were certainly not the fluffy, lovely sort one gets from top-notch HK-style dim sum places in KL. Instead, you get the old-fashioned, slightly yellowish-tinged bread texture reminiscent of steamed buns one gets from Chinatown alleyways in old Singapore (or KL, in this case).

The meat filling was tasty, in a robust, rustic way, with thick, oily juices seeping into the dough. The large "bao" came with minced pork and chicken filling, topped with the quarter of a hard-boiled egg.

But the piece de resistance must be the "lor mai kai" or steamed glutinous rice, flavored with soysauce, sesame oil and other condiments, topped with lovely, juicy chicken pieces. Unforgettable!

That "lor mai kai" sounds and looks very good! It looks like it was sticky and robust enough to support that metal bowl tipped on edge all by itself?

No other tid-bits sampled? That "char siu pau" reminds me more of a "tai pau" instead. :-)

It *is* a "tai pau" - that's my Blackberry next to it, so one can make a size comparison.

Umm, a bit hard to order much else as we came straight here from a Hokkien noodles dinner at Ahwa in Section 14, PJ :-D

Yes, that's right, you didn't actually say it was *barbequed* pork buns. My bad.

Heh, a diet? Nooo...what would we do without your reports! Perhaps one could sample stuff without eating it all? Just a suggestion... :-)

          ;:-)

Probably have to cut down on carbs. Anyway, am planning to introduce a visiting aunt & her family to KL Hokkien noodles this evening - it's going to be their first!
