Dovetail?

My wife's birthday is coming up, and she is interested in going to Dovetail. I thought I would check on here to get opinions on whether this is a good choice. She is open to other possibilities if there are better ones. As this is a special meal, we're not that worried about price, but we're not going to Per Se either.

Similar places we've been to include:

Tocqueville (very good)
SHO (very good)
EMP (excellent)
Jean Georges (meh)
Cafe Boulud (very good)

We generally care more about food than ambiance, but an atmosphere worthy of a special occasion wouldn't hurt.

Thanks!

In regards to your list of similar places Dovetail fits in around the middle top for me.
Tocqueville, EMP both are betting looking rooms, Dovetail looks elegant, just not as opulent looking as those other two. I'm not crazy about Jean Georges, and think SHO was great, but the setting was a little dated looking.
I don't think you'll go wrong going there, but if you want to investigate other options I'd suggest Picholine, Boulud Sud, Lincoln, Corton and perhaps Aldea.

Our first dinner at Dovetail was two years ago, and the food was superb. We went back for the second time last week, and I found the food to be rather disappointing. Though everything we had was fine, not one dish was rave-worthy as were all of those we had the first time, and that includes the signature foie gras with huckleberries. At this point, I wouldn't consider Dovetail for a celebratory dinner.

Corton is an excellent suggestion. Our most recent dinner there was stellar. I would also recommend Annisa where we just had an absolutely delicious dinner.

That's a shame about Dovetail. Your photos make everything look delicious, and was thinking about adding it to my list of restaurants that I should try. Thanks for the warning.

I'm not sure I'd advise you against trying it because Fraser is a very talented chef and is capable of serving really delicious food. (We also had a superb meal when he was cooking a Compass.) So, if you go, things might turn out more like our first visit. I just wouldn't do it for a celebration.
