I have a container of poppyseeds that I bought 3 years ago. I want to use the poppyseeds to make cookies. Should I discard the poppyseeds and purchase a new jar.
Do containers not have "use by" or "best before" dates on them where you are?
These seeds were bought in a large plastic like McCormick spices. These is no date on them.I will toss them and buy poppyseeds from the bakery in order to make hamantassen (sp) for Purim.
Taste and sniff them. Seeds may become rancid over time. You'll be able to tell easily if this is the case.
Many herbs and spices simply loose potency and may require using a larger amount.
+1 on the sniff test. even if not so far gone as to be rancid, they should be pleasantly aromatic. if not, just toss 'em. i keep all seeds, nuts, and flours in the freezer to prolong shelf-life.
