BEST high end restaurant near(ish) suburb of Sherborn?
A special occasion to celebrate, but we are from way out of town so not sure how to arrange. All cuisines are possible, very happy eaters, but discriminating palates. Have often, but not always, enjoyed Blue Ginger. Would love to surprise our celebrant foodie birthday girl with delicious and special dinner - doesnt have to be shmancy. Thanks!
I lived in Sherborn for 11 years until we moved to Lexington last November. It's kind of a wasteland for good food, to be honest, but I can second total13's rec of Maxwell's 148 in Natick. We ate at Zebra's quite a lot, but found it inconsistent. Sometimes we'd have a great meal; other times, it was just okay.
Another really good place is Cafe Mangal in Wellesley, about a 14 minute drive from Sherborn center, such as it is. It's a very pretty Turkish restaurant with excellent service. It's also BYOB, so if you drink, you'll save some money there.
One place you should avoid is the Sherborn Inn, though it may tempt you because of its attractiveness. The food is rarely anything special and can be downright abysmal. They change chefs like underwear and the good ones leave for better jobs very quickly. Most people I know just go for the bar!
I'm not such a fan of Zebra's, though I understand why it exists in a restaurant-benighted exurb like Sherborn. It's a weird hybrid of pub fare, French bistro, and sushi bar, and doesn't do any of them notably well. It's not awful, and it has the advantage of not forcing the locals to drive further to dine out, but I wouldn't make the hike back out there again from Boston, myself.
