Alternative to Sunday Roast at Bull & Last ? [London]
Hello. I am visiting London and am looking for a Sunday Roast near Hampstead Heath or the Columbia Road flower market. I've tried to book the Bull & Last, but there is no availability.
Is there a good alternative in either of those areas? I'm looking for good food, of course, but also a place that is quaint/old/atmospheric.
Hawksmoor Spitalfields is more convenient than Seven Dials, if you're going to Columbia Road. It's within walking distance (about 15-20 minutes) or you can take a cab.
Agree with the Red Lion and Sun suggestion if you'd rather eat near the heath - I really enjoy the food there and think its sadly underrated. On the plus side, it does make it easier to get a table. And it's alot cheaper than the Bull and Last.
Not too far from Hampstead Heath is the Red Lion and Sun - a very good Highgate gastropub. (It's less than 5 mins on the bus from the Bull & Last - we often go when B&L is too busy, which is often).
If the weather is nice, you can sit out front or out back in the garden, and inside pretty much your traditional gastropub. I haven't been for Sunday lunch but have always found their food excellent. Very good range of spirits, especially whiskies, if that's your thing.
Give Brawn at 49 Columbia Rd a try...or if you don't mind a slightly longer journey, then Roast at Borough Market (Floral Hall) is superb. If you feel like heading into central London (Covent Garden), I would go to Hawksmoor in Seven Dials. In my opinion, it is the best Sunday Roast in the UK...certainly the best (Ginger Pig)) and most (huge portions) food for your money (19.50?). In fact, I'm going next week!!
Brawn is brilliant, but don't expect a roast on a Sunday (it's not a pub).
There is a good Sunday roast at the Cat and Mutton on Broadway Market which is a ten minute walk from Columbia Road, and the Marksman on Hackney Road also does a Sunday roast but it won't compare to the Bull and Last.
