Freshness of seafood at Dragon Star

Prompted by a thread about live lobsters, I've been curious about the seafood available at Dragon Star. They have tanks of Dungeness crabs, a bag (box?) of blue claws, and a variety of oysters and clams, in addition to fish (tilapia? I can't remember).

Does anyone have first hand experience with the shellfish there, especially the crabs and clams? The prices there are great, but to be honest, a part of me is a little leery of inexpensive "fresh" seafood.

  1. I've only been in there once, and I don't eat seafood, but any purveyor worth their salt should let you directly inspect your possible purchase. Sight and smell should go a long way, ask questions like when it came in, stuff like that. I'm sure theres a guide online you could consult.

    1. I have purchased seafood from Dragon Star on a number of occasions (primarily lobster and crab) with mixed results. Sometimes it has been fine, other times, obviously not in its freshest state.

They generally get deliveries on most shellfish once a week per the last time I asked (Tuesdays?), so I'd recommend confirming the date and timing your trips around that day. That said, I haven't been since late last fall, so that could have changed.

      1. The oysters were good for steaming. I didn't care for them on the half shell. Again as stated before use your nose it hardly ever lies......The shrimp have always been OK.
