Salmon berries

I live in Oregon and would love to get my hands on some salmonberries. Does anyone know where I can pick some? Even in Washington, I'd like to know. Thank you.

    I've never had them.

The first thought I had was red caviar in a mountain man restaurant.

They are most common stream side, or in other wet to moist areas. They are one of the earliest berries in the summer, as early as June. Along stream side trails in Seattle area parks, a person can pick three or four at a time, enough to nibble or share, and continue walking.

They were common in Clatsop County, where I'm from. They weren't desireable enough to go to any effort seeking them out, but good enough for children to eat when coming across them. We found them in the cow pastures in the neighborhood.

More important than where is when, I expect. I've forgotten the optimal time to find them in berry.

The real prize is the native wild blackberry, which is worth the effort to find. The cultivars bear no comparison.

I don't know about Oregon but I'm sure its similar to WA. Salmonberries are to be found pretty much wherever there is rainforest, or whatever has replaced it. I used to live on the Olympic Peninsula and I remember them along trails, by roads, in small patches of woodland. Just get familiar with the leaf shape and you'll start noticing them.
