It was very old school, the view was amazing, the service impeccable and the prices stratospheric. The food was great and the wine list the size of the unabridged Oxford dictionary. It was definitely an old school restaurant that hardly exists any more, and the experience was completely worth the price.
If I lived in Paris or even visited regularly I doubt I would go there often, but as a special must-try experience I would recommend it.

I think you are getting lots of bad out of date advice. I ate there in 2002 and wasn't too impressed - it was too formal.
However I understand that there is a new chef and new attitude and they are on the rise, I have read a few quite a few, recent, positive reviews.
My advice is to ignore second hand opinions and give it a go, a fresh review is much overdue. The view is amazing, it is wonderfully old school and the kitchen is bouncing back - why hesitate?

If you go for the lunch menu it does not have to break the bank. I consider it as a unique experience, to repeat it or not is your choice but at least try it once!
There were no business people on accounts last time I went, just normal people, mostly tourists of various nationalities, including and mostly French. Like the Jules Verne, La Tour d'Argent seems to suffer from it's location and view which translates for some as "to avoid automatically " ... I have had very pleasant meals and remarkable service at both restaurants.›6 Replies-
re: monchique
I have never been to Tour d'Argent, and I have not seen any recent reviews. but I would not book and I would not recommend spending even the lunch prices based on many, many years of not just subpar reviews, but downright dreadful ones.
There is so much truly delicious food in Paris (at all price points), why go for "just okay?"

re: monchique
Thanks, I wanted to try the pressed duck. Also because I wanted to try some of the long established places I couldn't begin to consider the last time I was in Paris (when I was an impecunious student with a lot more time).
This time I only have four nights in Paris but a lot more $. I'm aware of the well-regarded new places but I also wanted to go to one of the old established places that I couldn't afford back then. I just wanted to know if they are still really good. I'm open to other suggestions.
