Tour d'Argent Paris

Anyone been there recently? It's on my list of must tries for my first trip back to Paris in almost 30 years.

Amazingly comprehensive wine list. That alone makes it worth a visit.

We're heading there this Wednesday for pressed duck and an aged bottle of Burgundy, I shall report back.

Last time I was in Antoine's, I spotted an ancient duck press among the antiques. A shame it doesn't get used.

It was very old school, the view was amazing, the service impeccable and the prices stratospheric. The food was great and the wine list the size of the unabridged Oxford dictionary. It was definitely an old school restaurant that hardly exists any more, and the experience was completely worth the price.

If I lived in Paris or even visited regularly I doubt I would go there often, but as a special must-try experience I would recommend it.

I think you are getting lots of bad out of date advice. I ate there in 2002 and wasn't too impressed - it was too formal.

However I understand that there is a new chef and new attitude and they are on the rise, I have read a few quite a few, recent, positive reviews.

My advice is to ignore second hand opinions and give it a go, a fresh review is much overdue. The view is amazing, it is wonderfully old school and the kitchen is bouncing back - why hesitate?

Thanks, I will give it a try. I emailed for a dinner reservation - I will report how it was.

I was there about three years ago.

Food was unremarkable (though the duck is very good and cheap).

My wife's menu did not have prices so she was unaware of the absurd prices for the soups/appetizers.

The view is amazing. The food less than adequate. The service is below par.

If you go for the lunch menu it does not have to break the bank. I consider it as a unique experience, to repeat it or not is your choice but at least try it once!
There were no business people on accounts last time I went, just normal people, mostly tourists of various nationalities, including and mostly French. Like the Jules Verne, La Tour d'Argent seems to suffer from it's location and view which translates for some as "to avoid automatically " ... I have had very pleasant meals and remarkable service at both restaurants.

I have never been to Tour d'Argent, and I have not seen any recent reviews. but I would not book and I would not recommend spending even the lunch prices based on many, many years of not just subpar reviews, but downright dreadful ones.

There is so much truly delicious food in Paris (at all price points), why go for "just okay?"

ChefJune: Maybe you should try the restaurant, and judge for yourself. The lunch menu is only 65 Euros... I don't think it's fair to criticise on old reviews, when there is a new chef and management.

Thanks, I wanted to try the pressed duck. Also because I wanted to try some of the long established places I couldn't begin to consider the last time I was in Paris (when I was an impecunious student with a lot more time).

This time I only have four nights in Paris but a lot more $. I'm aware of the well-regarded new places but I also wanted to go to one of the old established places that I couldn't afford back then. I just wanted to know if they are still really good. I'm open to other suggestions.

Sounds like you know what you want, and you have a great attitude.

Taillevent may also offer the experience you are looking for.

While Le Grand Vefour has slipped, the place, service, and the cheese cart have not. You would have a delightful 'old' experience. Also with the quenelles de brochet at Rostang.

Le Grand Vefour still has that great lunch menu, a superb deal at under 100 Euros. Check it out at their site.

Still pretty, still very good wine list, still wonderful view.

                      Sums it up well.

Tour d'Argent is an expense account place. There are many, many restaurants in Paris with far better food.

But where else can you get pressed duck?
