re: apples
I think Michael's is a huge rip-off for quite ordinary food and clubby in a very silly way. Unless you are known to them, or a media or publishing celeb, you can count on being ignored and put at a less desirable table. Certe is on the same block, and if you are looking for something homey and good it's a winner.

Walk to the Subway and head to Dominique Ansel or Buvette. Seriously.

One of my favorite breakfast spots in midtown is Certe (on 55th btw. 5th & 6th), takeout in the front and a hidden, sweet little dining room in the back, where they also prepare catering orders. Great if you want a step up from a coffee shop but not too fancy, great breakfast specials and home-baked goodies.

If you don't mind taking a little stroll, walk over to 9th avenue, from 57th down to about 39th street there are a million good options. My favorites for brunch over there are Eatery, Nizza, Marseille, and El Centro.
