Sacramento Organic Eaterys?

Any suggestions for vegetarian restaurants? And, someplace to celebrate major old birthday? Thanks.

  1. Mum's on Freeport Blvd. is organic/vegetarian. I've heard good things about it. Sacramento Joe's on Auburn Blvd. just west of Bell Street is organic/kosher and has a large selection of vegetarian items.

For organic/vegetarian suggestions, go to the Natural Foods Coop and ask to see back copies of the newsletter. They usually have a restaurant review in each issue. While there, join the Co-op. It's only $200 for a lifetime and you can pay in installments. They also have a buffet line with organic/vegetarian selections.

For major things like birthdays, we tend to get dressed up and go someplace we don't usually frequent. Places I like include:

Bravo on Fair Oaks Blvd. just east of Pavilions. Good food, friendly people and Mario Ferrari on the grand piano. Mario must be 200 years old, very gracious, and makes the rounds of the restaurant once an hour collecting requests.

Piatti's is right next door in Pavilions. Try to sit (unless you want to talk) near the cooking area. Smells are great and the cooks crack me up -

Rio City Cafe, especially in the summer. In Old Sacramento, right on the river. Seasonal "California" food, full bar, outdoor tables.

Biba's, if you have the big bucks. Seems like Biba is always there, smiling, gracious, and welcoming. The food is good, solid Italian with no 'fake it for the Americans' over tones.

Sac Natural Foods Co-Op used to have their old newsletters in archives online. Try their website. Also check out the restaurant reviews in the News and Review for more info.
