SN New Restaurant Replaces M&T in Flushing - Same Qingdao Flavors

New owner, same menu with the same chefs with Qingdao chops delivering some great, unique dishes. An added plus is that the place is tidied up – I loved Mei and James but at times it looked like the Collyer brothers had taken over the front end. Upon seating they still serve Laoshan tea as in days of old.
Appetizers sampled were the Smoked Fish and Spicy Chicken Hearts that they kindly combined on one plate. The Smoked Fish was delicious and while there were a few pieces of the Chicken Hearts unevenly cooked, they were nicely spiced.
Sea Cucumber with Elbow was next up. Here the pork shoulder was a savory melt-in-your-mouth deliciousness contrasted by the texture of the sea cucumber. Spicy Qingdao Intestines was ample – perfectly seasoned with a little kick. We ordered one dish of the Chinese Specials on the wall: Lifelong Happiness and Perfect Harmony. (百年好合 - Bǎi nián hǎo hé). Wishing newlyweds (or friends at the Lunar New Year) “lifelong happiness and perfect harmony” is an old Chinese custom. Here, White and Black Tree Ears, Pea Pods and Red Bell Peppers were simply stir-fried. A little bland – perhaps best served with a multitudinous meal.
We saw a fish delivered to a party of six and decided to order that too and were glad we did. Three pieces of yellow fish were quickly pan-fried then braised in stock, star anise, garlic, ginger and a few scallions; then topped with cilantro. Fried Corncakes were brought to the table for which to dip into the braising liquid. Do that quickly before they turn rock-hard. It reminded one dining companion of Mămăligă from her Romanian hometown. It all reminded me of earlier meals here.
