Hotpot @ Royal Palace, Canada Water/Rotherhithe, London
Excellent broths with flavoursome base and spices. A milky non spicy meat based broth, tempered with the mild sweetness of wolf berries and dried red dates. A sichuan-styled spicy numbing broth, moderate in heat levels, with the smoky aroma of dried chilli and the complex aromatic numbing quality of sichuan peppercorns.
The raw ingredients for cooking were generally of very high quality, superior to most hotpot places I've been to in London. They seem mostly sliced to order. But the lamb deserves special mention, a fatty cut with equal fat and meaty stripes, and truly flavourful. Perhaps more enjoyable than the lamb I had at Seven Park Place recently, despite the fact that the meats here had been frozen for cutting into the thin slices suitable for hot pot..
The sauces seem to be of higher quality as well. I loved the mix of the sesame sauce with a minced garlic oil, nutty, slightly sweet, very aromatic, with a lovely garlic pungency, probably the best match with lamb. The sha1 cha2 sauce was also very good, excellent with beef.
All you can eat costs £25, but we managed to stay under £20 per person ordering a la carte. Go for the the all you can eat only if you're very hungry.
