What/how much to order at Park's?

DrBruin Feb 29, 2012 12:14 AM

My brother is taking me out to dinner at Park's BBQ.

By the way, is this the restaurant's website: www.parksbbq.com?

I looked at the online menu and would like to know what (beef) dishes you ordered (if you liked it) and how many entrees would you recommend 2 healthy eaters to order? I was thinking of ordering one of the Gal-bi and one of the Bulgogi. I'm not sure if the seasoned Gal-bi is the way to go or another route.

My brother is not a huge pork eater. I'm not sure what GGot Sal is. Last but not least, I'm not into tripe.

Oh, and are any of the main dishes worth ordering or would it be overkill to order meat for BBQing and order some main's?

Thank you!

When I go we usually order one meat per person (but of course you can order more) and some sides. like the Pancake with rock shrimp, or the assorted mushrooms, My favorites meats are the seasoned Gal-bi (one of the best dishes in LA), the Bulgogi, the prime beef Tongue and the seasoned pork belly. Wonderful service, wonderful flavors and a wonderful meal. Enjoy!

I really liked the pancake with rock shrimp. We ordered that along with several meats and sides last time I went. The pancake was even good the next day, because we ordered way too much food. Most of the leftovers were good the following day. I believe we ordered the Galbi, too, but I can't recall what else.

      # of dishes = (# of people -1) + side order of mushrooms and or cold spicy buckwheat noodles

standard order of our party of 4

      3 Seasoned Gal-bi 양념갈비
      9 Beef Brisket Point 차돌구이
12 Special Pork Belly OR 14 Marinated Shrimp 새우구이
      15 Assorted Mushrooms
      2 Spicy Mul-naengmyeon 비빔냉면

for a party of 2 I would do #3 + one more meat, and then half order of spicy buckwheat noodles (3 1/2 Mul-naengmyeon 맛보기물냉면). I would pass on the mushrooms with a party of 2.

That sounds about right to me.

Although I would do the tongue instead of the brisket.

Why pass on the mushrooms? Is that because it's just too many mushrooms?

Yes, the order of mushrooms is pretty big. It's a large spread of various mushrooms and unless you have enough meat to back it up it's just overwhelming.

Basically you end up with either too many mushrooms or too much food when you order mushrooms with 2 people.

For 2 people, a $5 side order of mushrooms (which they don't offer goddamnit) would be perfect.

i'd stay away from bulgogi which is relatively lower quality meat. I like their galbi & unmarinated meat options. I do think it's overkill to order main dishes on top of bbq but you can always get leftovers to go. So if you wanted to get something else, I'd probably go with a stew (#5 & 6 are classic but i've never had those at Parks so can't tell you if they're any good). 2 years ago I would have recommended the mul naengmyun which is a refreshing end to a kbbq meal, but I was there 2 weeks ago and it was not good at all.

The beef tartar is actually quite good as well. Its an interesting twist with korean pears in it. As far as the BBQ goes, you cant go wrong with the seasoned Galbi. Its the best.

2 of us usually order 3 things and take what's leftover home to snack on later that night or the next day. my favorite (i only eat fish) is the spicy black cod. it's so good! I think we over order on purpose so we have leftovers.

We usually order 2 meat dishes for 2 people and an order of mushrooms for the grill. I prefer their unmarinated meats, as their marinades can be inconsistent or too sweet. I have never been impressed with their other dishes off the menu,

Thank you everyone for your suggestions. I went last night. We ordered the marinated Gal-bi which was very good.. I personally like bulgogi, so we ordered that and it was also very good. We did the half order of mushrooms which didn't seem like a lot (compared to what I was envisioning) and the pancake with rock shrimp and green onion.

Top two items: the marinated galbi and the pancake with rock shrimp. Loved the knife work on the galbi when they brought it out and how it unrolled it on the bone over the grill. I didn't find the marinade overly sweet like some of you mentioned. The pancake was killer. Loved it. Great texture, full of tiny shrimp, and the green onions added a lovely aromatic note.

Biggest disappointments: The Ban Chan and the service.

There weren't many Ban Chan to start off with and none of them blew my mind.

The service blew big time. We asked for a plate and forks (because sometimes I just get frustrated with chop sticks) 3 separate times before they came. I requested napkins on several occasions, only to have it brought out at the end when they dropped off the bill (I mean, sucking on the chili crab is a messy venture for me). Water was not refilled in a timely manner.

Overall, we left full and happy. The quality of the meat was very good. The marinade was also very good. Would I drive out from the South Bay to K-town every time I have a Korean BBQ craving? Nope (sorry J. Gold). If I were in K-town and friends suggested we go there, would I object? Nope. If/when I go there next time, I plan to try the spicy cod, the noodles, and I'd reorder the gal-bi and the pancake.

last time i went the service was the worst i'd ever experienced... not sure what happened but i did not see the owner there that night. every other time i've gone she's been there and has always stopped at our table. service was always great, so i'm sorry to hear that your experience was as bad as my last time there. bummer.
