Good and unique near UCF?

dimsumfan Feb 28, 2012 08:32 AM

Hoping for some specific help. I'll be at UCF for a day. What would be a couple of top picks relatively close to the campus? Looking for a possible late night dinner without a long drive, or more likely a bigger lunch at a place that doesn't just serve up sandwiches for lunch.

Restaurants like Ravenous Pig look more interesting for dinner than lunch, as the intriguing dishes fall off the lunch menu. But, if it's THAT good, I can go. Still, looks like a bit of a drive from UCF, but can go if it's worth it.

(By good and unique, I mean a non-chain, nothing terribly pricey or pretentious, but serving up interesting, quality food.)

You won't find any restaurants the quality of the Ravenous Pig too close to UCF, but if you like Thai food, I can recommend Thai Singha in nearby Waterford Lakes very strongly. Their drunken noodles (called pad kee mao/pad kee mow at other places) are the best I've ever had.

The food at Mama Millie's Jamaican Cafe right across the street from UCF is good too, but it's definitely not a fancy place. In fact, it's pretty much the opposite of that.

Make sure you try some Jeremiah's Italian Ice if you're there (since it is literally across the street from UCF, right next door to Mama Millie's). Best frozen desserts in Orlando!

I enjoy Mama Millies. She's back there cooking everyday and she's quite a character. She takes a lot of pride in her food.

Small local place but it does deserve some attention.

Perfect. Maybe I'll try to get to Ravenous Pig for lunchm, and then Mama Millie's for late dinner. Perhaps Jeremiah's for a late afternoon snack! Thanks for the suggestions...

I would flip it and do Ravenous pig for dinner and Millies for lunch.

Agreed, except the Pig is much harder to get into for dinner.

Thanks again, folks. I ended up at Mama Millie's for lunch and enjoyed the jerk chicken and goat curry. Unfortunately, I couldn't get to Ravenous Pig. Next time. Jeremiah's to cool my mouth after MM's. It was pretty good, but a little too sweet.

very cool. glad you liked it. I forgot to mention if you are near UCF Campus on Friday's Big Wheel Provisions food truck is there for lunch.

You check out their daily menu here - it does change often though but you'll get the idea of the food. http://www.bigwheeltruckmenu.com/
