What to do now that Thees' is gone.

For years Thees' at the Farmers' Market was the source of hamburger buns, hot dog buns, hot cross buns, and amazing bread and marzipan fruit. Now it iswhatever it is.

Any suggestions as to where to find these articles? Westside preferred.

Thanks.

  1. Feel your pain. i don't think i'll ever find a better cinnamon roll and i loved that cup they had with cake and cream and cherries. I think breadbar on third had good hamburger buns. got them once. it's just out of my way so i don't go there. i just googled it and yelp says it's closed?

    1. You ought to check out the Larder at the Tavern in Brentwood: http://www.tavernla.com/bread.html

Is this the joint that is now Short Cakes?

      2. If it's not too far out of the way, Bob's Market, 1650 Ocean Park, Santa Monica, carries a small line of burger buns & etc, that IMO are at least as good as Thees'. Note that they are not sold in the bread rack, but up at the meat dept. and carry the name of the lady who bakes them for Bob's.

        1. Thanks all. Thee's was a true American bakery. There are several reasonably good French bakers in Los Angeles, but not American.

            Hi Paliman:

I TOTALLY feel your pain. I used to buy Parker House Rolls and Monkey Bread. I also loved the smaller, ready-made chocolate Parisian cakes and princess tortes. They also had great cookies. Are there any more bakeries like them left in Los Angeles? I LOVE LOVE LOVE Porto's, but they don't seem to have any interest in opening a location in the city; and driving to Glendale or North Hollywood or Downey (REALLY?) just isn't practical for me. Viktor Benes is very good, but I found out that I have to special order the Parker House rolls or monkey bread in advance.

I really miss Thee's. The bakery that replaced it just doesn't cut it at all. We need a comprehensive BAKERY, not another gimmicky brand name.

            T-D.

short stack or whatever it's called doesn't nearly hold a candle to thee's offerings. everytime i walk by, just nothing sounds good to me from their selection.

            1. There are several tasty things at Short Cake; I won't make this a comparison thread.

But oh boy do I miss those PERFECT stellar hamburger buns.

Just wondering if Short Cake sells the burger buns that Ms. Silverton uses at Short Order?

                  i've never seen them there.

I doubt they do... when they first opened, they sold their AMAZING english muffins... sadly, they don't anymore or plan to. They are moving towards more of a cafe model...

They DID have the burger buns yesterday. When I asked the guy who made my pour-over cup of Verve coffee he said that they sell them only when they make too many so call before making a trip.
