Bakery with old school cake

Hello--SF hound coming to LA to celebrate my mom's birthday. She wants a cake with icing. Not buttercream, but that hard frosting stuff I remember vaguely from my youth.

Can anyone recommend a bakery that can make me an old school cake? We are staying in Pasadena and the party is in the Hollywood Hills area.

Thank you!

  1. I suggest the strawberry crown cake at Joan's on 3rd. It has the hard frosting and it has straight foward clean flavors and fluffy cake as well.

    1. There are "no-trans-fat" laws now, so i don't know if you can find a frosting made with good old-fashioned crisco . Even crisco is trans-fat-free now. Probably the Albertson's cakes are the closest.

      1. Check your local Hispanic markets or grocery stores.

          1. Bea's Bakery in Tarzana has some old-fashioned layer cakes with stiff frosting.
