open jar of expired Miracle Whip

This open jar of Miracle Whip has an expiration date of 8/2011. Is it safe to eat. It smells fine. But I don't know.

  1. Is it an expiration date, or a "best by" date?

Generally canned/bottled foods are safe to eat if they smell safe and unopened, etc.

It is an open bottle. And it actually says "Best when purchassed by Aug. 12, 2011" Thanks.

When did you open it? I am assuming it was in the fridge during that time. It is probably fine if you haven't lost power or anything. Personally if it has been open for more than 6 month I would probably toss it.

I should however point out I may be biased since I would probably toss out unopened Miracle Whip of any age (or give it to the food pantry) , but my caution is more out of a care for food sickness rather than my disdain for Miracle Whip.

I understand your disdain for Miracle Whip. It's not my favorite either. I'm at my daughters house who is ill and I'm caring for her a few days. Was hankering for a egg salad sandwich and all she had in the fridge was miracle whip. I thought better than nothing. Well now I think maybe not. Its probably been there since August when she moved into this apt. So its not worth it. Peanut butter will do just fine. Thank you for your replies.
