Deployed husband - need suggestions for cheeses

My husband is currently deployed and he has been craving cheese. He isn't a big fan of the canned variety, so I was hoping that someone could give me some insight on what to send him. I see that Swiss Colony makes shelf stable cheeses, as well as Hickory Farms and a few others. Has anyone ever tried them? Do they taste and melt like regular cheese?

Also, are there any cheeses that can go approximately 2 weeks without refrigeration?

Much appreciation and thanks in advance!

CarrValley of Wisconsin does an extensive mail order business. Ask them which types will work best for the location being sent to. They will also vacume pack if asked. Great for warm weather storage. Also keeps the odors from migrating. "Care Packages" are highly looked forward to and shared. My favorites were Dorito's and Pringles. Don't forget the crackers.

Thanks, everyone... I bought a few of the aged cheeses as suggested and also ordered the Washington Creamery canned cheeses. Im glad I posted because your suggestions led me to a Italian deli where I found 5 or 6 different types of salami that are also shelf stable and a huge assortment of preserved foods. If you have any other suggestions, please send along.

I really appreciate your help, his next 11 months will be much easier with good food...

Hard cheeses do best. Cheddar works as well Maybe toy can look for the waxed blocks of cheddar that Cabot makes. It is a nice cheddar that would surely satisfy a cheese lover and still melt when needed,

+2 for the hard cheeses. They will keep w/o refrigeration.

            -Aged Cheddar
            -Mimolette
            -Parmesan
            -Romano
            -Grana Padano
            -Aged Mahon

A big thanks to him and you for his service. =)

Yes, we do Hickory Farms cheeses for holiday gifts, and picked some up for us, too. They are "regular" cheese. I would go with those, as there is a big variety, and they are designed to ship. They will arrive in good shape and will fulfill his craving. It's also a familiar product that he could share with others, it would be a big hit.

I sent a Hickory Farms package to my nephew who was deployed in Afghanistan over Christmas a few years ago. He says it was a hit with the guys. An added bonus was that (at least at that time) they shipped free to APOs and FPOs as a thank you to the service members.

And they know what it is! It can remind them all of home. Some folks may not think it's the "best" cheese, but it's cheese from home.

If ou're looking for a cheese that melts well, I'd go with the canned Cougar Cheese from the Washington State University creamery.

+1 on Pikawicca suggestion; this is a fine aged cheddar, a natural cheese. They just have it 'canned' for some reason - not sure how that started, but it would ship GREAT and it tastes wonderful!

Nice suggestion. I'd forgotten about canned cheese. I do remember having a good one once, years ago, but I cannot recall the brand.

Most hard cheeses will keep without refrigeration.

I'd go for cheeses like parmesan or pecorino that will not go soft when kept out, or maybe a good aged cheddar.

(remember that cheeses were created/invented as a way to keep and preserver milk)
