The Modern with a noise-hating friend?

I remember there was a diffiulty with noiose in at least part of the Modern, and pledges to fix the problem. Can anyone make a recent noise report - say from January on? And recent noise comparisons between the main restaurant and the Bar room?

If you were with a houndish person who could be negatively transfixed by "noise", would you just skip the Modern? And if so, where might you go for a fairly high end yet relaxed meal, low on "noise"?

  1. Regulars here know that high noise levels drive me crazy. I have not been to The Modern Dining Room since last year. However, I have not heard anything to indicate that they have closed the gaping space in the wall separating the Dining Room from the Bar Room. So, I presume that the situation remains status quo ante. How noisy the Dining Room is depends entirely on how busy the Bar Room is since that is where the noise comes from. Many people feel that sitting in the Dining Room along the window wall in the center is the best way to mitigate the noise problem. Still, if your friend hates noise with a passion, you'd probably be better off going someplace else. As to where....?

We just had dinner at Ai Fiori. It had been a year since we were last there. Despite the departure of Chef Chris Jaekel, with Chef PJ Calapa now helming the kitchen, the food remains superb! This is one of *the* most comfortable and pleasant dining rooms. On a busy Saturday evening with all tables occupied, the noise level was *very* low. Plus, major points in my book for there being no music! .

    1. I ate in the Bar Room back in January and can confirm that they have not done anything to close off the gap between the Dining Room and the Bar Room. I have not eaten in the Dining Room, so I can't compare the two, but the Bar Room was pretty buzzy the Friday night I was there.
