It's a bit more upscale, but Ralph and Rich's is within a stone's throw of the arena (right across from the Barnum museum), and has some great Italian (and LOVE the decor!).

Doesn't quite fit the categories you listed but they make some creative sandwiches, etc.. It's on Fairfield Avenue too which is loaded with many other dining choices as well.
