What do we know about Darryl's?
For as many times as I've popped in for a drink (I live nearby), I'd never once ordered the food until just last week. The fried chicken was really superb. I'd suspected as much, seeing and smelling it on countless tables. I thought it was just short of ideal - a nudge of seasoning was all it needed, but otherwise it was crispy, juicy and just ever-so-slightly greazy in a great way. They gave me a leg and when I said, "Thassit?", she took it back and piled on 5 wings too, which were just as spectacular. The mac & cheese are that gooey, chewy kind that I like and the tangy collards were perfectly cooked, in other words, not to oblivion.
The catfish fingers also look and smell fantastic. And I just happen to be at a point in my life where I require more catfish.
Cool atmosphere, live jazz and occasional reggae every night, pretty good if not especially craft-y bartending (better to stick to the classics), a 2am license Thu-Sat, just okay food: American with a Southern lilt, most everything under $20.
