I just read this on a Baja web site, and my jaw just hit the floor! I thought it tasted good, but what's up with that???

Can anyone shed some light on this?

I have made that bike ride before! Lot of fun but be careful there are always accidents!

In the south they always use lard for cooking. They say it gives more flavor than regular oil. I tend to agree and as long as you don't overdo it I think it is fine.

Or just get some grilled fish but most places down there overcook it.

Ugh! LARD??? But as HOMER SIMPSON would say..."but it tastes sooo good!"

Thanks for the info, I did that ride for the 1st time last year, my riding partner was "creamed" by 2 people and suffered a concussion, and suffered amnesia for 2 weeks! (Guess if he would have had more "LARD INFUSED LOBSTER" the fat in his head would have cushioned the impact!!!) I guess as long as I consume LARD once a year, i'll keep my "girlish figure"!

Thanks again!

Whenever i am in Ensenada I go eat at El Rey Sol, fantastic place!! The duck is outstanding as are most of the other dishes there. A lot of the food is french classic. Good luck on your ride!!

El Rey Sol is a favorite, upscale for Baja eating establishment,in Ensendada. Everything is first class. Classic ceasar salad made tableside, with anchovies, and the rest of the food is always impeccable. Another favorite is La Fonda. Great mexican dishes, steaks and quail. I have always found the Lobster in Baja everywhere to be a little overcooked and chewy, but I think that is the California Spiny Lobsters lot in life. Cooked in Lard and served up with melted margarine. Yummmmmmmm.

Baja is vacant now that everyone thinks the border is going to take several hours to cross. tourism was down 50-60% in Rosarito & Ensenada !

Now to the offical report on the Lobster this year....

Puerto Nouervo was like a vacant lot on Saturday Nite at 6:30pm!!! Even with about 6-8000 cyclists in the area no one was eating there. There were no real bargains on lobster either. And we decided to ry somewhere else besides Puerto Nouervo Restaurant#1, and went just west of it. The "combo" was suppose to come with Lobster Bisque, Beans, Rice, and a coke. The place refused to give me a "diet coke" with the meal, and charged me for 1 coke in addition to the meal because I gave my coke to the person seated next to me. The bisque was okay, not great, and the lobster (now that I know it's fried in beef lard) was greasier than I recall from Restuarant #1, grease was dripping from those bad boys! The rice & beans were good though.

And the strawberry margs were mui-bien'! My favorite thing had to of been the Chroo stand located across from "LA TORTUGA" in Ensenada. They have the best strawberry filled churro's ever! And the chocolate filled churros rock too! You expect a "churro" to be fried since it is a "donuts cousin" though!

Anyhoo, BAJA seemed a little less fun without the crowd, but it was nice to be able to walk without seeing the people "falling & stumbling" all night long.

I'd love to know if there are any "vegetarian" places in Rosarita or Ensenada?

FYI - Border crossing at 7am Sunday 9/31 took all of about 12 minutes.... Viva USA!!!!

Bob, first off - congratulations on the ride! Re: your question, I think the answer is fat chance. You could probably find a seafood restaurant less judicious in its use of lard (but why?), though I seriously doubt that area of Baja has much in the way of strict veggie fare. Nonetheless, I would love to be proven wrong. Let me know what you find out!

We always go to Puerto Nuevo #2. There you can get the lobster cooked in lard, or boiled or broiled. They often have a special dish of marlin in chiles that is superb. Restaurant #2 costs a bit more but we think it is worth it.

La Fonda has great broiled lobster - broiled with butter, not lard. Halfway in between Puerto Nuevo & Ensenada in La Mission. All food is great here, but you may have to wait at the super-fun bar. Say hi to Dimitri/Joe!
