We were in Sacramento yesterday to sign some papers for a new car and asked the guy in the auto place for a place to eat -- not fancy but good. He told us to go to the Stagecoach restaurant on Florin Rd. (that's where the car dealer was). Anyway, we walked into the place and I immediately figured I'd order breakfast -- it looked like an ordinary cafe and breakfast is usually the better bet at these.
Then I looked at the specials board and noticed some things that looked interesting. First of all they had some good sounding soups listed -- smoked turkey/barley and a ham and bean soup -- they said they were "homemade." Excellent sign.
But further down the specials board was the kicker. Two-meat combo mesquite bbq with potato salad and ranch beans and soup or salad (I had the smoked turkey/barley soup) for $7.95. I couldn't resist so I ordered it. Wow!! There is someone in that kitchen who really knows how to bbq. On my plate were 2 beautiful large tender really meaty pork ribs, red from the smoke and just glazed with a sweet, tasty bbq sauce, and a leg quarter of a chicken beautifully grill/smoked and glazed with the same sauce. These were accompanied by a wonderful eggy potato salad -- kind of creole, but not very spicy -- good though -- and a small bowl of incredible ranch beans loaded with flavor from smoked meat.
I asked whether they served this special often and they said that they serve bbq there every Wednesday. So, if you're in Sacramento on a Wednesday, I'd certainly recommend this place for the bbq or the soups. The other dishes seemed pretty ordinary and it was late, so I didn't see any breakfast orders come out of the kitchen -- it's a good bet for breakfast, though, because they served us a very good housemade biscuit and honey with the bbq.
