Removing oneself from Thread

If there is a link to how to do this just reply with that, but is there a way to stop following a thread or remove it from the list of ones you want showing up each time they are updated?

I think what's really needed is not to be able to remove oneself from a thread but to have a flag (a variant of the "new" flag) that indicates when there is a reply to something one has previously posted in response to the discussion/question. I have no interest in reading the latest in the 1000+ posts on strange food combinations. However, if someone posts a question regarding something I posted on that thread a couple of years ago, I would like to know (without having to spend a day on it) so that I can answer and not leave them hanging. It would be easy enough to just ignore it when a "new" flag resurrects an old thread that no longer interests me so long as I know the new post does not directly pertain to my previous participation in that thread.
