The Red Onion - new owner + renovation

Anyone knew about this ? Guess it's been much longer than I thought since I was last there. Turns out new owners swooped in in Feb 2011, and renovated three months later.

Was there tonight. Same menu more or less (fewer desserts), and about the same prices. Oh but what's this .............. onion rings ?!?!? Whowouldathunk ! After 25 years they finally are offering onion rings. So I had to order them. Uh oh was my reaction when they arrived ..... looks (and tasted) like the same as the OR's at Dairy Queen, your pre-fab frozen variety. WTH ?? I watched the line cook for 10 mins and only saw him dump taters into the fryer. ORs came from the back kitchen, so couldn't be fresh-cut onions made on the premise. New server even came back and asked me how we liked the OR's !

New decor is marginally better, they more or less just added bench seating along the two walls. Like a cheap(-er) episode of Restaurant Impossible. Place was virtually empty when we showed around 6:15pm, but by the time we were leaving closer to 7:45pm the place had 6 tables occupied.

I'm missing that old familiar buzz where lineups were often the norm. Oh and of course the red onion with our bill ...... part of a bygone era, it seems.

Husband and wife team took it over. He's in the kitchen and she runs the front. Very friendly people. It has been fairly busy when I've been in the hood on weekends.
The one time I was in- the daily special burger recommended by the owner was adequate but that's about it.

Thx for the intel. Is the wife blonde, and the husband brown-haired who works the grill ?

I hear that the former owners have rented the space vacated by the Tinker's Hatch bakery at 33 and Mackenzie and looking to open an upscale bakery cafe there (name on the window paper but have forgotten it). Anyone know?

The barber around the corner was my source; the window announcement is there so interesting to see what develops.
