Fu Zhou XiXi Handmade Fish Balls (Monterey Park)
Fu Zhou XiXi Handmade Fish Balls (aka 福州西西手工鱼丸) was previously discussed and reviewed by Chandavkl here (http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/686850) but because that thread doesn't list the restaurant in the title, I though I'd start a new thread.
(Note: the English name is a literal translation of the Chinese name, so take it as you will).
The bread and butter of this place is the (what else?) the fish balls, which are just fine and dandy in their own right.
They also have dumplings (fish, pork, and vegetarian) and simple noodle dishes, which, again, are just fine in their own right.
But you know what you should come here for?
The Chicken Taro Cakes. How best to describe these things? Sort of like a savory Taiwanese Sun Cake filled with mashed taro (instead of maltose) mixed with shredded chicken.
Yes, I know it's a bit of an odd concept to wrap your mind around, but it has a nice creamy smooth texture -- without being mealy -- balanced with a good hint of salty chicken-ness. Outer layer is a bit crunchy too. The filling reminds me very much of a chicken burrito with refried beans. Actually, the entire thing sort of reminds of a taquito stuffed with chicken and refried beans.
Give it a try if you're in the area. Go for the fish balls, stay for the Chicken Taro Cake.
