forget camembert, take up tunworth instead

available from neals yard, tunworth's cheese is superior to any camembert i've tasted. so tasty, such great texture and such a wonderful mushroomy damp forest floor aroma. an astonishing cheese.

  1. It's interesting to see cheesemakers make soft French style cheese better than the original. There's quite a few around nowadays, mainly coming from the south west. This one only seems to be available from specialist cheese shops in southern counties

    1. nothing can replace my beloved camembert, but i shall check this out. when i lived in california i used to eat stuff that had been smuggled in, but you had to know the right people to get the good stuff. ;)

        I'll second the love for Tunworth. A truly wonderful cheese. Had a lovely one over Christmas, oozing and cabbagey as it warmed.

      2. Hear, hear! Tunworth was one of our most recent NY discoveries, and we squirrelled away a round of it in our bag -- it made the return to Brussels much more pleasant (as did the wedges of Spenwood, Cornish Yarg, Montgomery Cheddar, Isle of Mull Cheddar (what is life without comparative studies?) and a FABULOUS stinky washed rind gem from County Cork called Milleens Dotes). UK farmhouse cheeses are extraordinary.

          Milleens is a star cheese. There are several similarly styled cheeses from cork and the surrounding area - all good.

        2. I haven't tried it, but having looked it up I see it's made from unpasteurised Ayrshire milk, which probably goes some way to explaining its tastiness.

          Many years back I was in a B&B in the Lake District and the owner had secured a camembert-like cheese which had actually been made in Ayrshire. It was truly wonderful.

          The kicker ? The B&B owner was a Frenchman, who freely admitted that the cheese was better than any he had tasted in France. Praise indeed.
