Game Birds

Was thinking about doing a feast of game birds this weekend - and I need something a little more adventurous than chicken or duck.

Any ideas where I can buy pheasants, partridges, pigeons, grouse and the like?

We're around Chelsea but are prepared to travel for our feathered friends.

Thanks in advance!

Bayard Meat Market on Bayard Street in Chinatown has always had partridge when I've visited, two to the bag, not expensive. Citarella and Dean & Deluca might have squab or quail. Grouse is out of season, although you might get it frozen by mail order.

Esposito on 9th Avenue can probably get some or all of those if you phone them ahead. I was there yesterday after a long absence and was once again struck by the kindness and helpfulness of the guys behind the counter. As I recall, they deliver with a minimum.

Try Citarella. I've seen some game at the UWS store - their website lists quail, guinea hen, pheasant & squab.

I don't know about any places that have them. However, D'Artagnan carries a variety of game birds. That would mean, of course, putting off your dinner until they are shipped to you.

Btw, pigeon is more commonly known as squab.
